IoT Week 2017

Virt-EU will take part in IoT Week 2017

The IoT Week will present emerging technologies and solutions related to the Internet of Things with pioneering research projects, SMEs and industries. It will also discuss the recent developments in the IoT standardization landscape. Selena Nemorin from London School of Economics will deliver a talk entitled: Social and Ethical Implications of Commercial Drones in the IoT.

Talk abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), colloquially known as “drones”, are rapidly integrating into civil practices. To date, drones have not typically been networked into the Internet of Things (IoT), although given increasing enthusiasms around the economic viability of drones, integrating these machines into IoT-connected commercial environments is inevitable. As often the case with new technologies, rapid adoption of drones in civil society has already exceeded legal, policy, and social capacities to manage issues such as personal and informational privacy, safety, and security. As IoT connected communities are becoming a reality, securing their infrastructure through properly regulated drone use ought to be a priority for the safety of digital communities. As such, this presentation seeks to encourage further debate around the social and ethical implications of IoT-connected drones, while at the same time acknowledging their functional and economic benefits. The presentation also offers an overview of the regulatory landscape of drones in the UK, and concludes with a discussion of policy responses.
