Commoning Design and Designing Commons

[To read about the workshop outcome: click here]

Commoning Design and Designing Commons is an interactive online workshop organized as part of the Participatory Design Conference (PDC) 2020. The workshop explores both the relevance for PD of the commons as an objective to be pursued and of commoning as a way of practicing and being together.

What: the workshop invites the PD and akin communities to critically reflect and explore how commons & commoning can protect and support sustainable and fairer futures for communities of humans and non-humans. In particular, what can participatory design researchers, activists, and practitioners contribute to the commons, and how? (Read more about the workshop framing)

When: 16th June 2020, 10.00-13:00 (COL time – GMT -5). Workshop organizers and participants will also have remote meetings and activities before the 16th.

Where/How: the workshop is geographically distributed and anyone from anywhere can participate. The workshop will rely on Zoom as main platform, and it will be complemented by the use of other collaborative services. Participants will receive guidance and tools to conduct small activities in preparation of the main session on the 16th of June. (Read more about the workshop format)

Outcome: the workshop aims to produce an open pluriversal card deck about the topic of commons/-ing and its relationship with PD.

Participate: interested researchers and practitioners should send position statements reflecting on a past, current, or envisioned project/case about the theme of commons/-ing and participatory design (1 A4 page case/project presentation). The statements will each be reviewed by two of the workshop organisers.

Deadline for submission of position statements:  8 May

Selected participants will be informed by 15 May

Submit your position statement in PDF format to Joanna: jsaa(at) itu(dot)dk and Giacomo: gipo(at)itu(dot)dk, with the e-mail subject: PDC2020: Commoning Design WS

We aim for a variety of cases covering different scopes and and wide geographical distribution. Organizers will also collect cases and examples as a basis for hands-on mapping and discussion during the workshop.

Price: Please check the conference website for the latest information. There are different types of participation “passports” for the conference. So far, it seems not possible to only register/pay for a WS without a conference “passport”.
