SUMMARY:"The Expanded Image" in the symposium SCREENSHOTS: Desire and Automated Image.
DESCRIPTION:The Expanded Image: A Media Archaeology of Automated Image Processes\nPresented at the symposium SCREENSHOTS: Desire and Automated Image at Kunsthal Aarhus\, Aarhus\, Denmark\nMarch 8 2019\n \nRosemary Lee delivered a presentation on her concept of the “expanded image”\, which she developed through a media archaeological examination of automated image processes. This presentation was part of a symposium and exhibition entitledSCREENSHOTS: Desire and Automated Image organised by Magdalena Tyzlik-Carver\, who is an assistant professor at Aarhus University. Lee’s artwork The image is a machine. was also presented in the adjoining exhibition at Galleri Image.

SUMMARY:image machine / machine image in Berlin
DESCRIPTION:image machine / machine image at Galerie Gilla Lörcher Contemporary Art Berlin\nJanuary 25 – March 8 2019\nRosemary Lee’s exhibition project image machine / machine image examines the automation of image processes\, sharing artistic authorship with machines. Technologies such as digital photography and machine learning have reshaped aesthetics\, but also the possibilities of what an image can be and can do. Inspired by the quote\, ”The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.” by Sol Lewitt\, this project looks at parallels between conceptual art and cybernetics. Early cyberneticians envisioned biocomputers which could be used to automate conceptual tasks\, which has been actualised\, albeit in different form\, through artificial intelligence. The large-scale automation of image production through the use of machine learning\, has had the effect of embedding algorithmic processes into the image-plane\, while also obscuring them from view. While the procedural nature of digital images is commonplace\, it brings with it an inescapable opacity at the same time. These themes are explored through a series of drawings and an installation in the gallery space. The drawings work with the idea of the image as a process\, the performance of a set of instructions. Working with the latent aspects of images as coming from the artist’s mind and articulated or expressed through the body\, the drawings explore different kinds of mechanical programs\, interpreting a set of procedures into visual outcomes.

SUMMARY:Rosemary Lee's Molten Media at the "machines will watch us die" exhibition at The Holden Gallery in Manchester
DESCRIPTION:Rosemary Lee’s research and art project\, Molten Media\, will be presented in the exhibition “machines will watch us die” at The Holden Gallery in Manchester. Molten Media has been a 5-year investigation into deep-time and ecological relationships between technology and the earth. “machines will watch us die” is on view from the 9th of April to the 11th of May\, 2018. \nIn the exhibition\, a feeling of nostalgia for the technological past is combined with a sense of anxiety for an unknown future. The artists share a set of concerns that relates digital decay to themes of consumerism\, obsolescence\, loss and failure. Throughout the show\, the boundariesbetween the material and the immaterial are constantly questioned to reveal the impermanence of all things digital and show how digital decay is shaping future archaeological scenarios for the digital culture of our time. \n“machines will watch us die” is curated by Patrizia Costantin as part of a PhD in Curatorial Practice at Manchester School of Art. \nhttp://www.holdengallery.mmu.ac.uk/2018/machines-will-watch-us-die/ \nView FullscreenSkip to PDF content
