The colorfulness enlivens the pages but most of all I like the indication of diversity and continuity that the form represents.

A blog is probably an old-fashioned form for reaching an audience, but I like the options for combining various types of information with the service of archiving. I will pause the first until I retire and will need another home for my public information channel, while the latter, DECIDIS, will stop and the purpose of will be continued with in the present blog.

I have decided not to allow comments and replies for two reasons: The general purpose of the blog is to have a communication channel; and I will not be able to find the time to reply and engage in discussions. The dialogue, that I am definitely interested in will have to take place in other contexts.

BIO, 21.03.2022

Gitte Stald, Associate Professor, ph.d., Digital Society and Participation, IT University of Copenhagen. I have a particular interest in groups and individuals who experience challenges regarding management of everyday life and of citizenship in digital society.

My journey as a researcher has been long but felt short and there is still so much to engage in, investigate, communicate. My interest in the role of media and information and the first steps into digital society started already while I was a student in the late 70s and the 80s but as a scholar my research took off with my master thesis (Magisterkonferens) on the Danish Trade Union Confederation (Then LO) in 1989 when I was part of a major analysis and reporting on LOs media. I focused on the local unions’ magazines. It was highly interesting and relevant. My engagement here – with a detour to a local television station as a communication manager – more or less lead to my participation in the Nordic Network Children, Youth, and Media (Børn, Unge, Medier – BUM) that kickstarted my ongoing focus on children and young peoples’ media cultures – in the dynamic development of intertwined realities and research foci which are indicated by the research collaborations I have engaged in and by my publications.

I participated in the European comparative project Children and Their Changing Media Environment 1995-1998; in the research program Global Media Cultures 1999-2001; in research and development projects on mobile content for young Danes 2004-6; on mobile solutions for dyslexics 2006-7; in The MacArthur Foundation’s series on Youth, Digital Media, and Learning; in the project Mobity on user driven mobile media communities 2008-9. I was the Danish local project manager in the two European networks/projects EU Kids Online 2006-2014 respectively Net Children Go Mobile 2012-2014, and in Children Online: Research and Evidence (CO:RE) 2021. From 2014-2019 I headed the research network Democracy & Citizenship in Digital Society (DECIDIS).

My latest study is called Youth, Trust, Information, and Democracy and presently I focus on writing and communication my results from this project and on my ongoing research about youth, informed citizenship, digital literacy, and democratic literacy.

Throughout my research career, I have had a keen interest in the role of research in society, hence also in the relevance and quality of the research and research results that we offer to society.
