His project is titled “Restoring the Amazon Forest at Scale: An ethnography of digital technologies in ecological restoration in Brazil” (ReAmazon). He will be hosted at the Center for Climate IT from mid 2026 to early 2028.

Felipe’s ongoing ReAmazon research project

Brazil has set an ambitious target for restoring a significant part of the Amazon Forest by 2030. The main idea is to transform the south-eastern part of the Amazon, known as the “Arc of Deforestation” because of the intense effect of the advance of the agricultural frontier in the landscape, into the “Arc of Restoration”. The strategy rests on turning the country’s largest environmental drawback, emissions from land-cover change, into an opportunity to consolidate a specific set of sectors associated with the green economy, such as the carbon credit markets, forest restoration, and the large value chain that follows it. The issue, of course, is that the degraded area is incredibly large, much larger than the capacity of the sector to restore it.

An important discourse coming from both researchers and companies is that some of these scale problems could be overcome by employing more modern technologies in the restoration process, such as digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) tools, drones, AI for continuous certification, and more. This kind of discourse fits nicely into a long history of claiming new technologies are the solution for governing the Amazon region and echoes contemporary ideas coming from Big Tech companies of how digital technologies enable exponential growth of markers. This, and other complexities, makes for a very interesting case for STS research, and connects very well to the CCIT research agenda. My project examines this relationship between technological innovation and the ambition to scale up. Through ethnographic methods, I seek to understand what kind of environment these ever-evolving forest restoration practices are creating.

Felipe’s educational background and academic interests

I have been interested in the intersection of digital technologies and environmental issues since my bachelor’s in Computer Science at the Federal University of Itajubá (UNIFEI) in Brazil, where I worked in an Incubator for Social Cooperatives assisting family farmers dealing with information systems. During my MSc and PhD in Science and Technology Policy at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil, I moved closer to STS and anthropology and worked specifically with climate change issues in both the Cerrado and the Amazon through ethnographic methods.

I think my computer science background is very present in my research practice. Although I find myself closer to the STS community in both reading and writing, navigating the intricacies of climate change’s fast-changing technological landscape opens up interesting forms of collaboration. For example, I continuously collaborate on projects about the use of satellite data in advocacy for the recognition of indigenous territories in Indonesia, and have worked with musicians on art-technology projects that focus on transforming environmental data about the Amazon into immersive experiences.

I am very excited to be part of the CCIT and ITU. The opportunity to join such an active group of researchers interested in how information technologies relate to climate change is inspiring, both for the feedback I can get for my own research and for what I can learn from the research of others.

Read more about Felipe and his work: IT-University of Copenhagen page – LinkedIn

Felipe Mammoli is a new Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoc researcher at the IT University of Copenhagen, and he will be working on a project about new digital technologies in forest […]

[1,43

post-2046","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","category-felipe-mammoli
["GET
