With a background in Anthropology (PhD, Aarhus University 2010), my focus as Principal Investigator of the DecouplingIT project relates to exploring the conceptual issues of what decoupling ‘means’ socially and culturally in a variety of different contexts. I also aim to visit at least some of the field sites where project members are carrying out fieldwork in order to connect the conceptual to the empirical realities. The research is part of my ongoing interest in the social and cultural roles played by technologies in relation to the climate crisis.

I have a bachelor’s in Social Sciences at the State University of São Paulo, in Brazil, and a PhD (2018) in Social Anthropology at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. I have conducted fieldwork in the Parliament of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby and my research focused on the state, bureaucracy, and Christianity. Since then, I have undertaken a new ethnographic project in Brazil on the sociocultural dimensions of new technologies in efforts to develop the Amazon region.

I have a background in Sociology, Ethnology and Information Systems. My research for the “Decoupling IT” project explores data ‘activism’ in China as a civic harnessing of the capacities of data to promote climate justice, and as an alternative way that IT can address the climate crisis. In particular, I am interested in the production, use and consequences of corporate ESG data by civil organizations in China. I am currently also engaged in research projects that investigate the ESG initiatives of business associations and SMEs in Denmark and the EU. My previous research focuses on public digitalisation in the public sector and related governance issues.

I hold an MSc degree in socio-cultural anthropology from Utrecht University, the Netherlands. My research for the ‘Decoupling IT’ project explores processes of digitalisation in South African agriculture, with focus on climate-smart, data-driven agritechnology such as precision farming. Previously, I have undertaken ethnographic research in the Western Cape on issues relating to land governance, infrastructure and citizenship.

With a background in Digital Development in the Global South (PhD, IT University of Copenhagen 2023), I am a postdoctoral researcher in the DecouplingIT project. My research is centered on a sub-project in Bangladesh, where I am investigating the integration of adaptation and digitalisation strategies in ‘char’ communities, affected by climate change (flooding, drought, and river erosion). Here, I examine how NGOs provide services such as climate-smart agriculture, digital healthcare, and weather and early warning systems, and how these services are adopted by the community in their daily lives. Additionally, I am exploring the ‘Smart Bangladesh’ policy and interviewing government officials to understand the government’s plan for smart digitalisation in marginalised communities.

I am a PhD fellow with background in Social Sciences and Science and Technology Studies (Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, 2022). As part of the Decoupling IT project, I develop my fieldwork in Iceland, where I investigate how climate and IT intersect through energy consumption and generation, with particular focus on data centers, blockchain operations and AI. My interests are in how the materialities of IT infrastructures are socially produced, and on their future imaginaries in times of climate emergency.
