New publication on the complications of deploying technological solutions to capitalist problems

Steffen Dalsgaard and Hasib Ahsan have had their paper, “Entanglements of Sustainability in Dhaka: The Complications of Deploying Technological Solutions to Capitalist Problems,” published in Kulturanthropologie Notizen. The paper is written based on ethnographic fieldwork that Steffen and Hasib conducted in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2023.

“We argue that technological solutions are never simply technical. They are entangled with social inequalities, labour, government policies, economic interests and global capitalism. A technology introduced to address one sustainability challenge can sometimes create new problems or make existing ones more complicated,” Hasib writes. Read the paper here.

The research was supported by the DecouplingIT project based at the IT University of Copenhagen and funded by the European Research Council (ERC).
